OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA — Deafhood Foundation board elected Marilyn Jean Smith as Organizing Chair at its recent bi-annual board meeting that took place in Oakland, California. The board also elected Marvin Miller as Marketing & Public Relations Chair. These elections took place after previous chairs ended their terms.
“This is such an honor and privilege to serve the Foundation, and I’m thrilled to be working with an awesome group of Deaf people dedicated to social and economic justice for all Deaf people,” said Marilyn Jean Smith, Organizing Chair. Smith is well known for her role in founding Abused Deaf Women Advocacy Services (ADWAS) and successfully raising funds to build transitional housing for abused Deaf women in Seattle, Washington.
Butch Zein served over 6 years as Foundation’s Organizing Chair, and his term ended recently. Zein will remain on the board.
“I loved serving the board these past 6 years. The journey was so positive in many ways for the board and for myself, ” said Butch Zein, outgoing Organizing Chair.
The Foundation grew from nothing to over $80,000 in its funds under Zein’s term and accomplished a long and critical list of goals.
Marvin Miller is replacing Kathy Say who was with the Foundation from the beginning as well, and Say played a critical role in encouraging the Foundation transform from an idea into reality. Kathy Say is leaving the board after 7 years of service, and she is currently employed at Purple Communications.
“The board thanks both Butch and Kathy for their valuable service, and we will miss Kathy as she moves on to new endeavors.” said Marilyn Jean Smith, Organizing Chair.
Honorary board member, Dr. Paddy Ladd joined the board meeting for the first time as a part of his recent Western USA presentation tour on his upcoming book, “Deafhood Pedagogies”. The board loved having him and appreciated his words of wisdom.
Mel Carter will assume the Grants Chair position from Marvin Miller, and the Foundation will be making an announcement on its grant award for this year shortly.
The board recently saw addition of five new people last spring, and they are: Ritchie Bryant, Melvin Patterson, Raja Rajeshwari, Timothy Riker, and Terri Waddell-Motter. You can meet these new board members at:
The foundation is focused on social and economic justice for all Deaf people and envisions a future where audism and other forms of -isms are fully recognized and steps are taken towards to ending them once for all.
